Supporting My Student

We understand you play an integral role in your student’s college search and that now is an exciting, but often overwhelming time. As your son or daughter navigates the application process, here are a few important items to keep in mind.
  • Help your student keep track of important application deadlines to ensure he or she applies on time. The priority deadline at the University of Maryland is Nov. 1. Applying by this deadline ensures best consideration for admission, scholarships and invitation to special programs.

  • Encourage your student to identify the teacher and counselor who will be submitting a recommendation letter on his or her behalf as early as possible. Students should identify their recommenders through our online application using the "Recommendations" tab in the left navigation menu. Your student may complete this step even before submitting his or her application.

  • Remind your student to follow up on his or her application. Your student may confirm receipt of application materials by logging in the online application portal. Although students are required to apply online, completing the application will require your son or daughter to have additional application materials sent to the university, such as official transcripts from his or her guidance office and SAT and/or ACT scores from the testing center. If your student has recently sent items that are not yet listed as received, please note it takes up to two weeks from the time we receive them to post to his or her account.

  • Make plans to visit campus. In the meantime, contact the admission representative for your area with questions you or your student may have regarding the college search process or the University of Maryland.

Your student has grown from his or her first steps to the next steps for applying to UMD.

We look forward to reviewing your student’s application!
