Information for Parents

Getting Started...

It’s never too early to think about college. Whether your student is still in middle school or thinking of transferring from another college, you can begin to gather information about colleges and the admission process.

Here are some easy steps:

  1. Research schools and colleges online – you’ve already started!

You can use good ole’ Google, try the College Board website at collegeboard.com or visit other college search services like Petersons.com and princetonreview.com. You can also sort through that mail that’s been arriving at your home and look through the brochures together with your son or daughter. If you see one with a turtle on the cover, you know that’s from Maryland…

  2. Personalize the process….now that your student has some colleges in mind, he or she can request to be placed on their email and mailing list to receive important information. In order to do this on our site, click here.

  3. Learn more about the majors and academic requirements. At Maryland we have over 100 majors to choose from in 11 colleges. If you are not sure about a specific major…check out the Division of Letters and Sciences where you can explore different areas of interest.

  4. Visit! There is nothing like seeing the campus in person! Whether it’s a family road trip or a bus ride down the street, it’s important to visit colleges and universities to see if they feel right. The University of Maryland has a number of information sessions, tours and events available throughout the year – for visit schedules click here.

  5. Don’t forget to ask questions along the way….visit our Frequently Asked Questions guide online by clicking here. You can also email or call us using the contact information at the bottom of the page. And yes, “Who is Testudo?” is a valid question….he’s our terrapin mascot!

Now you're ready for the application process...
