Historic High Number of Applications Received for Fall 2008

This year we have received a record number of applications, over 27,000, for freshman admission for the fall 2008 semester.  We are proud of the interest that Maryland is garnering from some of the nation's most talented students.  We anticipate enrolling a freshman class of 4050, nearly 200 students fewer than last year's class.  The combination of having over 27,000 applications and a reduced freshman enrollment will result in a smaller percentage of students being offered admission this year than in previous years.  We will continue to offer spring admission to a number of talented students who we are unable to accommodate in the fall semester.  As in previous years, students admittted in the spring will be able to begin their studies in the fall through the Office of Extended Studies in the Freshmen Connection program.

Spring Admission

In the past, the University of Maryland offered a small number of wait-listed students admission for the fall.  However, starting with the fall 2006 class, we eliminated our waitlist.  Since that time the University has offered spring admission to an increasing number of freshman applicants.  Students with strong credentials who do not earn admission in the fall may be competitive for admission to the university for the spring semester which begins in January.  Admission to the university for the spring semester provides students with the same academic and social opportunities available during the fall.  Spring admission gives students a unique opportunity to participate in the freshmen connection program for the fall semester prior to spring enrollment.  Students admittted for the spring also have a number of other options for the fall semster, including participating in community services, travel, work or earning credits at an accredited college or university for transfer to the University of Maryland.

Freshmen Connection

The Freshmen Connection program gives students admitted for the spring semester an option to get a head start on their enrollment.  Coordinated through the Office of Extended Studies, the Freshmen Connection program allows students to register for up to 16 credits in courses offered at off-peak times during the fall semester.  These courses consist of university requirements in fundamental studies and CORE curricular classes.  A full-time advisor is available to students in the Freshmen Connection program.  Participating students are eligible for state and federal financial aid, as well as opportunities to become involved in campus activities.  For more information, please visit the Freshmen Connection Web site.
