Technology and Communication Services

Students living in residence halls, university-owned fraternity and sorority houses, and The Courtyards and South Campus Commons apartment communities have basic university telephone, wired data and cable television services included in their housing fees or rents.  All residence hall rooms also have wireless Internet access.

Laptop computers are available for checkout at the Stamp Student Union information desk.  Hundreds of workstations are available on a walk-in basis in 30 computer labs.  Students can access the university’s network from any location.  You will also be eligible to receive cell phone discounts with designated providers through the university’s discounting program.  For more information on these services and more, visit the Office of Information Technology website.

Students living off campus can learn more about purchasing phone, data and cable services from local utility companies by contacting Off-Campus Housing Services.

Transportation and Parking

Regardless of where you live, you will use the resources of the university’s Department of Transportation Services.  In addition to operating several campus-based routes that operate up to 20 hours per day, Shuttle-UM buses serve a six-mile radius around campus, taking students to local neighborhoods, Metro stations, shops, restaurants and more than two dozen nearby apartment communities.  All you need to ride Shuttle-UM is your student ID.

First-and second-year students who live in residence halls may purchase parking permits and bring their vehicles to campus.  A range of permits, including options for carpoolers and students who only plan to drive to campus occasionally, are available for off-campus students.  Please see the DOTS Web site for details.
