Maryland Transfer Advantage Program Frequently Asked Questions
1. Who should consider the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program?
High School students who intend to complete a program at the community college and then plan to transfer to the University of Maryland.
Students currently attending a partner community college who are considering a Bachelor's degree and plan to transfer to the University of Maryland.
2. What are the steps for Maryland Transfer Advantage application?
- You will complete and submit the Maryland Transfer Advantage application.
- Your application will be forwarded from your community college to the University of Maryland.
- You will be contacted by the University of Maryland regarding your acceptance as a participant in the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program
- Once a participant in the Advantage Program, you will be encouraged to consider your education plan with a Bachelor's degree in mind. Please see the list of majors at the University of Maryland here.
- After you have completed 15 credits at the community college you will be eligible for all Maryland Transfer Advantage Program activities.
3. When should a student apply to the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program?
This program supports students who are attending community college and plan to transfer to the University of Maryland. The benefits of the program rely on your participation while you complete your program at the community college.
- You are encouraged to apply to the program as soon as you are accepted to the community college.
- However, you may apply at any time while enrolled at the community college until you have entered your last semester at the community college.
- If you are presently enrolled at the community college the last date that you may apply to the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program depends upon your transfer plans. For example, you have the option to apply for fall or spring admission to the University of Maryland. The minimum participation in MTAP is one semester before transfer. Therefore you must be a participant in the program the prior spring or fall.
- Also you must be aware that there is an application deadline for spring and fall acceptance to MTAP. If you plan to enroll at Maryland in the fall semester and want to participate in MTAP the semester prior to transfer you must meet the MTAP application deadline of November 15th. If you plan to enroll at Maryland in the spring, and take advantage of MTAP you must meet the MTAP deadline of June 1st.

Current community college students who are in the process of submitting a transfer application to the University of Maryland should not apply for the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program.
Freshmen who have been accepted for Spring admission to the University of Maryland should not apply to the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program.
4. How does a Maryland Transfer Advantage Student enroll in a University of Maryland Course?
- As a Maryland Transfer Advantage student who has completed 15 credits at the community college, you may wish to enroll in a course at the University of Maryland and take advantage of the course tuition scholarship.
- You must meet with the community college advisor/counselor to choose the most appropriate course to complete at the University of Maryland.
- You must read carefully and complete the Course Interest Survey. Have your community college advisor/counselor sign the Course Interest Survey and submit to the University of Maryland. See the deadlines on the Course Interest Survey.
- The University of Maryland will contact you regarding the enrollment in the course.
- You must refer to the University of Maryland Schedule of Classes to choose courses. Registration for a particular course will be according to seat availability. To register for a course you must have completed any required course pre-requisites. Please note that some courses are restricted to students in Limited Enrollment Programs or to Maryland students in particular majors.
- As a Maryland Transfer Advantage Student, you will receive a 25% course tuition scholarship and are limited to one course per semester at the University of Maryland with a maximum of 9 credits. With the payment of fees you will have access to all services and benefits available to University of Maryland students including a Maryland student ID, and access to the UM library system, UM athletic events, the Shuttle Bus System, the Campus Recreation Center, the Stamp Student Union, reduced ticket prices for events at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and access to the University Health Center.
5. How does a student complete the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program?
For completion of the Maryland Transfer Advantage program you must:
- Finish your program at the community college (Associates Degree or Transfer Certificate (30 credits) that includes 5 general education including the Maryland Freshman English requirement and a college-level mathematics course). See detailed information for each community college:
- Anne Arundel Community College
- College of Southern Maryland
- Montgomery Community College
- Prince Georges Community College
- Achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
- Enroll at the University of Maryland, College Park or at the University of Maryland College Park program at the universities of Shady Grove within one year of completion of the Transfer Certificate or Associates Degree
- Not matriculate at any other institution of higher education after MTAP acceptance
Students who have sucessfully completed the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program are guaranteed admission to the University of Maryland.
6. How does a Maryland Advantage Student Transfer to the University of Maryland?
Following completion of the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program, community college students are well prepared for seamless transition to and success at the University of Maryland.
To transfer to the University of Maryland, MTAP students must complete a Transfer Admission Application.

The Maryland Transfer Advantage does not provide special consideration for Limited Enrollment Programs. Maryland Transfer Advantage students are eligible for University of Maryland, College Park programs or programs at The Universities at Shady Grove. Students who choose to transfer to Shady Grove generally are expected to have completed an Associates Degree.
7. When should a Maryland Transfer Advantage Program participant transfer to the University of Maryland?
- Upon successful completion of the program you are guaranteed admission to the University of Maryland.
- You should complete a University of Maryland transfer application once you have completed the requirements of the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program. At a minimum, you must paricipate in the Program for one semester for all benefits to apply.
