The critical research efforts of the 21st century will focus on the life sciences. Our first-year biology courses are innovative and engaging, with introductory lecture courses broken down into small sections with labs and discussions each week. Our faculty includes world-renowned researchers who are committed to undergraduate teaching and experiential learning opportunities for students. Students work with faculty to make fundamental laboratory and research discoveries in fields such as chemistry, neuroscience, molecular genetics, proteomics, host pathogen interactions, structural biology, nanotechnology, ecology and evolution. Internships (and later careers) take our students from A to Z - from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to the Walter Reed Institute for Pathology, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Smithsonian Institution and the National Zoo.
